If we were in the SEC...

...we'd be ranked this morning. Only loss was to a top 10 team on the road with a respectable score. Arkansas is still ranked despite losing to a team that got beat by a Sunbelt team. aTm is top 20 after losing to a Sunbelt team. I guess they beat a Miami team that got run at home by Middle Tennessee. Oregon got absolutely blasted by UGA and is top 15. BU had a respectable loss to BYU, not as respectable as ours to NCSU, but nevertheless they are top 20. OU hasn't beat anyone and got beat at home by a team that lost to Tulane...at home. KSU is top 25 and lost to....Tulane at home.

I get it...someone is going to say keep winning. The rankings are pure garbage. We've played about as tough a schedule as anyone in the country and are sitting at 3-1 with a respectable road loss. Rant over.

Moving on…

At this point it’s just a sad pissing match on Twitter and message boards . Neither side is “winning” and has yet to make a point that will magically change the preconceived notion the other party already had. Texas fans called us trash and Lubbock still bothers them, surprised? I’m moving on to KSU, feel free to join. We can pick up the conversation again come basketball season.

STORY: Things I Liked & Disliked Against Texas

I usually go with five things that I liked and five things that I disliked, but I couldn’t come up with five things I disliked yesterday. So, I’ll mention the few I thought of quickly because there wasn’t a whole lot to feel sour about in the overtime win.

Disliked:

Offense Stalling:

Man, the Red Raiders could’ve put the game away early. The Jones was buzzing after the Reggie Pearson interception in the second quarter. You’re up 14-10 and Hudson Card turns the ball over for the first time this season, and the play call is two draws with Sarodorick Thompson before a false start and then a blown-up play before a punt.

Just killed momentum, and it’s a minor gripe in retrospect, but the Longhorns scored 14-unanswered points until the half out of the great momentum swing from the Pearson interception.

Longhorns 21 Second Drive in the 4Q

This drive was very frustrating to watch. You take the lead after a five-minute drive and just have to seal it.

It was even more frustrating when the Longhorns giftwrap you nine seconds of clock on a ten-yard gain to open the drive. Then you give up a chunk play to an uncovered Tarique Milton that set the Longhorns up for the game tying field goal.

Williams can learn from a few things on this drive but all in all, it didn’t matter.

Liked:

Donovan Smith:

This may be the best game I’ve seen Smith play.

Perhaps it was recency bias but without turning the ball over while throwing the ball 56 times, he looked great. Smith threw for 331 yards while rushing for 42 yards on 15 attempts and three total touchdowns.

Smith managed this game very well and put the Red Raiders in great position to win.

Free Plays:

This is a reflection on Smith, but the two free plays that resulted in deep shots that connected (one being a pass interference, but same result) was key.

The one to Cleveland was a great throw and catch, a big-time momentum play and was awesome to see.

Myles Price Usage:

Price showed it against NC State, but Saturday was his true breakout.

He had 13 catches for 98 yards in the win while being targeted 17 times. The connection between him and Smith is growing, and Price is starting to show why there was so much preseason hype around him.

Offensive Line:

The O-Line played great on Saturday, only allowed 2 sacks and ZERO quarterback hurries.

Donovan had clean pockets most of the game and it showed. There usually is a correlation between good quarterback play and good offensive line play.

The return of Weston Wright was huge as Jacoby Jackson made a big impact at RG. I have a feeling Jackson may take the starting RG position from Landon Peterson at some point this season.

Tight Ends:

Without Henry Teeter who missed Saturday's matchup do to being “banged up,” the Texas Tech tight end room played great.

Mason Tharp and Baylor Cupp showed their prowess in the passing game and should prove to become even bigger impacts in the offense.

The two tight ends combined for 78 yards on five catches and a touchdown, mostly shouldered by Cupp. The touchdown was a hell of a play call, too.

Aggressiveness on Offense & Game Management:

Man, going for fourth down that many times is BALLSY.

Joey McGuire & Co. didn’t seem to care, going for it on fourth eight times and converting on six of them.

I was also impressed with Tech’s ability to keep the ball for lengthy amounts of time yesterday. Five drives longer than 4:30 and six of ten plays or more. They did a great job of keeping the Texas defense on the field, and it was key to the victory.

Bijan Robinson Contained:

The defense balled out yesterday.

When what’s likely the best running back in the nation rolls into your home stadium and he’s held to 101 rushing yards, you did something right.

When you force said running back to fumble in overtime, you definitely did something right.

Reggie Pearson:

Speaking of the Robinson fumble, Pearson recovered it. The second time he was involved in a turnover in the game.

The pick and the fumble recovery were massive to the defense’s success on Saturday. Pearson also made five tackles against the Longhorns.

Special Teams:

Teams has been a struggle for the Red Raiders all season, it wasn’t on Saturday.

McNamara, outside of one punt, was great. Punt and kick returns were competent, and Trey Wolff appears to have officially won the kicking position.

Price made his first punt return and made a play, shocker.

Speaking of Wolff, one more time to close it out.

Big 12 Power Rankings Week 4

  1. Oklahoma State (3-0 0-0, Last Week 2)- DNP play this week. They are at the top as they have not lost and have won their games fairly convincingly on both sides of the ball (minus some late game defense issues week 1. Cowboys seem like the team to beat in the Big 12. They play Baylor this week to prove that they are for real.
  2. Baylor (3-1 1-0, LW 4)- Overpowered the Cyclones in Ames in fairly convincing manner. Blake Shapen doesn’t appear to be the best big 12 QB but he is a reliable one and has not made many mistakes this season. Run game leaves much to be desired. Getting up early on Baylor to force Shapen to make some passes may be the blueprint to beating the Bears. Will try to grab first this week vs the Cowboys.
  3. Kansas State (3-1 1-0, LW 8)- Hot and Cold team every year makes determining if they are a good team or not very challenging. Adrian Martinez will NOT repeat his Heisman level performance vs OU again if I had to bet on it; however, Deuce Vaughn will make life hell for all Big 12 DCs. I’m not willing to say they are the best in the Big 12(can’t lose to Tulane at home). Big battle against the Red Raiders this week in Manhattan.
  4. Texas Tech (3-1 1-0, LW 7)- Wow that was an insane game. This team and staff had a game most did not see coming. Donavan Smith ran a good offense that kept us in it the whole time, converting 4th down after 4th down in gutsy fashion. Defense made adjustments at half and stifled the Longhorns vaunted offense (usually average Texas RBS look like Heisman contenders against us, instead of us making a Heisman contender look average). Trey Wolff was awesome in the clutch as well. Travel to Kstate this week to face a very different style of team.
  5. Kansas (4-0 1-0, LW 6)- I feel bad putting Kansas this low given they have the best record but I just haven’t seen a truly quality win yet. I’m getting sick of saying how good QB Jalon Daniels is but my god this kid is amazing and I have no idea how Kansas landed him. He is your top QB in the big 12 and I’m not sure it’s close. He passed for 324 yards/4 TDs and ran for 83 yards/1 TD. Up next, a scrappy Iowa State team in Lawrence.
  6. Oklahoma (3-1 0-1, LW 1)- Got manhandled by Kansas State for the third time in four years. Is Venebles’ Oklahoma squad not as good as we thought or are they just cursed by the Wildcats and will win out? Their biggest weakness was certainly their defense who let Adrian Martinez look…really good. Have TCU in Fort Worth as a touch up game before the RRR the following week.
  7. Iowa State (3-1 0-1, LW 3)- I don’t think they are as bad as this fall appears but other teams performed this week and they lost at home. QB Hunter Dekkers was picked off twice and the defense could not turn the ball over themselves, not a recipe for success. In for a doozy this week against Kansas.
  8. TCU (3-0, 0-0, LW 9)- Entertaining battle for the Iron Skillet, TCU came out on top of cross metro rival SMU. SMU desperately wanted revenge against Coach Dykes but ultimately fell short as they couldn’t stop TCUs offense when they needed to. Max Duggan performed well but I have no idea if he’s the QB going forward or is keeping Chandler Morris’ spot warm once he comes back. Some may argue I have them too low but they have beaten nobody with a pulse yet. They can change that narrative with a win over Oklahoma this week.
  9. Texas (2-2 0-1, LW 5)- The longhorns did not adjust at all to what the Red Raiders threw at them. They started strong and could not sustain against 100 snaps by Kittleys offense. Hudson Card actually played a decent game, Bijan Robinson fumbled it away, and Xavier Worthy hobbled his way to some big catches. This team has the talent but the coaching Saturday was not good. Battle for 10th place against West Virginia this week.
  10. West Virginia (2-2 0-1, LW 10)- Won against historic rival Virginia Tech which is good for their confidence going into the thick of conference play but VT is objectively bad. Nobody really stood out to me in this game, maybe Cj Donaldson? This team is not good so far and their coaching isn’t one that will win them close games. Texas this weekend.

Player of the week: Kansas State QB Adrian Martinez, he was eviscerated by the media after the loss to Tulane and then turned in an elite performance against the Sooners. He could not be contained by the Oklahoma defense which was supposed to be very good, accounting for 5 (4 on the ground) touchdowns. Red Raiders will need to make him throw more if they want to win this week.

Team of the week: Texas Tech, nothing is better than beating your instate arch rival, especially when it’s Texas. Texas Tech outclassed the Longhorns in the second half outside of the 30 second drive to tie it in the end. Not many defenses will shut down Bijan Robinson this year but Texas tech did it
