History 101

The first Texas Tech game I saw in person was in 1976, the Astro Bluebonnet bowl. Since then you can count on two hands the number of 9+ win regular seasons we have had and still have a couple fingers left over. If you go back even further, those numbers get even worse. We have a great fanbase, and have some real success at other sports, but I don’t care what coach, conference, competition, and “talent“ we bring in here, I truly believe that our program will never elevate to the heights that we expect and demand. It’s cathartic writing this. at 58 I feel foolish expecting anything different.

The Kittley Problem

Anyone that thinks he is competent is clearly wrong. So the question is why did he get to keep his job after last season?

1. McGuire is too loyal/didn’t have the stones to fire him?

2. Powerful allies. Wes is a Texas Tech legend and Mahomes is probably in ZK’s corner.

Those are two very powerful allies.

If we are keeping Kittley because Kirby is worried about losing Wes we have a big problem. You don’t make football decisions to save a track coach, no matter how good the track coach is.

If we are keeping Kittley because Joey is loyal or doesn’t see the problem we have an even bigger problem.

If we are keeping him because we are trying to keep Mahomes/Adidas/millions more in donations happy… shit… I understand. Sucks, but I get it.

It’s going to be a long season, boys.

For those that still think Joey is the guy

What exactly can you point to that leads you to believe that? I wanted him to be the guy for a long time and now I'm just not so sure. I look at other coaches at programs that have stepped right in and already eclipsed anything Joey has managed to achieve here. Teams that were in just as bad a position as when Joey took over. The higher recruiting rankings under Joey aren't exactly translating. The transfers have been impactful but not nearly enough. Do you think over time this will get better until we can out talent other teams? It doesn't feel like it on my end. Has the player development been all that good overall? Not particularly from what I can tell. Has he surrounded himself with amazing coordinators? Not really. Has he shown any willingness to fire coordinators when they fail? Nope. Are the coaches often out coaching the other side and making the necessary adjustments throughout the game to win? Nope, if anything it's the opposite. I'm just not really seeing the areas where Joey is gaining an advantage over other conference teams going forward so I'm hoping a true supporter of Joey at this point can tell me where I'm misreading the situation we are in. At this point it just feels like we have a 6 -7 win coach which isn't horrible but isn't exactly what we should expect in this league.

The Greatest Comeback in American Political History

That is what we just witnessed take place tonight. I am reflecting on what has occurred over the last four years.

In February of 2021, Donald Trump was persona non grata even in Republican circles. Members of his own party wouldn’t even be seen with him. He was in the middle of a second impeachment trial and soon to be criminally investigated and indicted in 4 different states. He was banned on all social media platforms, having to resort to old fashion press releases only his family and friends would circulate. His wife’s donations to charities were refused simply because of her last name. They were exiled. Polls showed Republican voters might be looking for other leaders. DeSantis? Youngkin? Haley?

Once he began his campaign, he would have to spend part of his days in a court room, and the other part on the campaign trail. He had to fight state AG cases attempting to bankrupt him of his financial resources. He then had to deal with a total 180 in an unprecedented move of a major party nominee being thrown off the ticket, after Trump had spent millions only dollars and years running against Biden, and replaced with a new opponent. He even withstood a bullet to head. All the while, his support grew and grew.

And it all culminated in this, what looks like it will be a modern landslide. Only the second Republican to win the popular vote in almost 40 years.

Love him or hate him, one must recognize and appreciate what we just witnessed. This was a truly legendary campaign that will go down in the annals of American history for centuries to come.

American loves a comeback story, and she just got her biggest one to date.

The hump that we can't get over...

is right in front of us. I see a path. We're very close.

Throughout the Kliff and Wells years the hump wasn't even in sight. It was very far away. We weren't even trying to get over it.

Doesn't mean I'm happy with everything, doesn't mean I don't still have serious Qs about in-game decision making or Kittley's offense. But we're talking making some tweaks vs. needing a complete overhaul.

If you don't see that, that's on you.

SPITBALLIN' Final Whistle Feeling: Colorado

What a shame. Colorado was trying to hand you a game that they got a lead in and you couldn’t take it. You weren’t good enough upfront to even have a chance.

Major Letdown: This sucks. Tech couldn’t get it done offensively for many reasons. The Buffs gave you many opportunities to stage a comeback, but the Red Raiders couldn’t find a rhythm offensively after an electric start. Thought the defense played well enough to give you a puncher’s chance, but offensively it wasn’t good enough.

Questionable Fake Punt in 3Q: Going to point to this as where the air came out of the balloon for the Red Raiders. Don’t really get it in the moment and it wasn’t executed very well. Obviously you’re looking for a spark, but really wonder if that was the spot.

Tech OL Beat in All Facets: I don’t know how to positively spin that one. The offensive front was absolutely a mess all night long. Morton was pressured, Tech couldn’t run block and it was absolutely a train wreck. It caused turnovers, it caused the offense to be even more out of rhythm. Just have to be better at that position.

Brooks Breaks the Record: Really happy for Tahj but it is such a shame that it happened in the circumstances that it happened in. Just a dang shame.

Comments from Joey and more thoughts tomorrow/Monday from me coming.

For the rest of the season….

You’re bowl eligible but out of the conference race. Maybe it’s time to use the bye to get Hammond ready. Have j’koby/dickey going at least 50/50 with Tahj so he doesn’t get hurt and still go pro. Micah (if healthy) getting some run, plus these other young guys you brought to start getting some snaps. Joeys recruit play both tackles and left guard hell maybe every position. Young guys playing edge. We’ve brought in high rated recruiting classes with some athletic freaks I think it’s time for the last 2 game to give them snaps and see what we have for the future.

Deion is in year 2 after taking over a doormat program..,

And JM is in Year 3 after taking over a .500 program.

Deion’s team looks a lot better than they did before. They’ve improved.

We look no different than we did in Year One. Same mistakes despite better talent.

If JM doesn’t make changes in the offseason we’ll continue to look exactly like we have since he took over, mediocre.

Personally I’m sick of seeing Baylor and CU go from doormat to contender in two years while we stay mediocre year in and year out. Last week when JM looked like he was about to cry after beating ISU. I wasn’t sure whether to be excited because of the emotion or believe that he thinks beating a good team is above and beyond what Tech should be doing. I’m still not sure.

I don’t think expecting more than seven and five in this league is expecting too much. I love Joey, but we are underachieving right now and I hope he realizes it.

What I want to see

Is how we respond. Flush this.

You are going into a bye week and then to Stillwater that will be 3-7 against an absolute scrub QB in Alan Bowman.

Come out and play angry for a change. Be violent, go smash another team. Show you have guts for a change.

I’ll be in Stillwater and will come unglued if we lose this game and have some other made up BS excuse like refs, altitude, weird feeling before the game etc etc.

Show up and crush OSU.
