An excellent weekend that included a wild ride on Friday night, but it all turned into a weekend series win over Oklahoma for Texas Tech.

After Sunday’s loss, Tech is 65th in the RPI, could’ve really used that last one in Norman, but you’re still in decent shape in the conference landscape. Tech is now sitting at 6-6 in conference play, two games back of first with four more series to go.

We’ll go by position groups, per usual, after what was a really solid weekend for the Red Raiders.

Pitching:

For all the talk that was in the game threads about the pitching staff this week, these guys really had a good weekend. Outside of Mason Molina’s start on Friday, everyone turned in solid efforts.

Molina just didn’t have it during his start, got worked for a lot of pitches in his short outing. Frustrating when he couldn’t land the fastball very well and didn’t get help from the defense the entire game.

The pitching strategy this weekend was interesting to me, throwing Girton after Molina and then using Beckel for extensive relief to close it out, although you needed help from the offense in the tenth.

Girton seemed to throw better out of the pen, which seems to have always been the case. Very interesting development if you’re able to find a third starter for Sundays with 4-5 innings available out of the pen from multiple guys.

Speaking of, Ryan Free was flat out dominant on Saturday. 15 up, 15 down to close out the game with nine strikeouts. I doubt that he’ll be able to throw 65+ pitches with consistency as the fastball velocity seemed to drop by a few ticks later in the outing, but he was able to command the off-speed stuff, which kept him perfect throughout.

I enjoyed watching Jacob Rogers work on Sunday. Really made two mistakes and it’s why he gave up three runs. Two sliders that backed up on him left the yard. Encouraging stuff from him since you need someone to step up on Sunday’s.

Hitting:

Can we give Gavin Kash the Big 12 Player of the Year award already? He’s been otherworldly and his stellar weekend continued in Norman. Three homers and a grand slam to seal Saturday’s win.

I’ll continue to say it since it’s getting to a point where you have to mention it. Tracer Lopez continues to become a much better player, at the plate and in the field, but mostly the latter.

Kevin Bazzell had a really good weekend at the plate, something that he’s done all year.

The offense continues to roll, despite a bit of a struggle on Sunday, and they’re going to have to keep it going. The Red Raider offense is likely to take them as far as they are going to go this year.
