Huge crowd at the home of the President of First Financial Bank. He said it was the largest attended one ever in Abilene . Also bragged about how much Abilene loves Texas Tech. Said there are now three schools of the University in the city and that local alumni raised all of the capital for construction as well as the funds necessary for the first three years of operation. Said there are now 600 students attending and that the university has never had to spend one dime for all of that. Alumni Assc had a golf tourney last week and raised $22K for scholarships.
So the promotion said Kirby, Grant, and Joey would be in attendance. - however only Coach McQuire was present. No mention was made of where the other two were. Really disappointed that our BB coach wasn’t there but hopefully he was out recruiting.
Joey mesmerized the room. The guy has an uncanny ability to motivate a crowd unlike any one I’ve may have ever heard. A few highlights off of the top of my head:
1. Said we have the best QB room in the B12. Said both QB will play on Sundays in the NFL Later said several schools tried to illegally poach Morton away from TT in the off-season. Said he called at least two schools and told them to stop it.
2. Said at RB we had two backs very similar last year. This year he said Taj is back but that Camron Valdez is an entirely different kind of runner. Described him as a back that makes one cut and is gone for the home run.
3. Said that the OL was the weakest part of the team last year and now is filed with size and depth. Said all of first and second team OL were starters in at least one game last year. Bragged about the C from W Kentucky.
4. All WR return plus they added a speed burner. Seemed very confident about the group.
5. Then he talked for 20 mins about the defense. He said in a very loud voice “this is West Texas and we play defense in West Texas!” Among many gems he said it will be the defense with the most speed in the NCAA.
6. Talked about Tyree Wilson at the NFL draft - said he was only drafted player who was wearing his school emblem and colors. Said he told Pat M that you represent TT on offense and I’m gonna do that on defense. Also said - this sounds almost too hard to believe - they are gonna be even better collectively at DE this year that we’re with the first round NFL draft player from last year.
7. When he took questions he was asked about the recruitment of Micah Hudson. He smiled and said - all right y’all turn your phones off. Looked like he wanted to tell story then he seemed to think better if it and then talked about him in the third person. It was certainly implied they feel very good about how that is going. Mentioned that when you recruit kids like that you have to be patient as it takes longer for them to commit.
There were lots other great things he mentioned including that they saw the highest GPA ever as a team last year. It’s clear the staff demands a commitment to academics. He stressed that for a kid to play at Texas Tech they must really love football because of all of the demands the coaching staff places upon them.
Guys, I am convinced that after what for some of us is truly a lifetime of waiting - our long journey is over. We are finally headed into the Promised Land.
