The court ruled that an area of Baton Rouge can legally break away and form it's own city. The population is more affluent and will leave the poorer part of Baton Rouge with a much smaller tax base. Opponents cite the division as economic segregation with racial overtones. It will be interesting to follow this case.

The ruling will most certainly be appealed in a federal court. If allowed, it's not hard to see more efforts from wealthier areas to separate from economically disadvantaged ones in other states. The division would have obvious effects in schools and other services.
