Disclaimer: Our 'chatter' threads should not be taken as gospel. These are bits of information that we have come across that we definitely feel qualify as plausible or probable, but may not be absolutely certain. This may not qualify as capital-J journalism but, ultimately, our view is that you subscribe to RedRaiderSports.com for access to precisely this kind of behind-the-scenes scuttlebutt.

Furthermore, these bits of information are from the RRS staff collectively and coming from a variety of sources. I'm simply tasked with putting it all together in post form.

... As we previously reported, SMU head coach Sonny Dykes interviewed late yesterday for the Texas Tech position. From what we understand, that interview went well. TCU is, no surprise, heavily pursuing him for its now vacant head coaching position. He remains a candidate for the top spot in Lubbock but there is a wide-spread belief within the college media and coaching space that Dykes will remain in the Metroplex - either continuing at SMU or moving down the road to TCU.

... We are gathering that in the very near future, possibly as early as this week, Texas Tech will interview Baylor associate head coach Joey McGuire, Oklahoma defensive coordinator Alex Grinch and Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko. Oklahoma is idle this week, Baylor is playing at TCU and Texas A&M is hosting No. 12 Auburn. You all are well aware of the McGuire sentiment out there. We have also talked to three coaches that have worked with Grinch before and they all tell us how impressive he is to be around. Elko made $2.1 million last season at Texas A&M while Grinch earned $1.8 million with the Sooners.

... Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach, as we have reported over the last week, has been in contact with people connected to the Red Raiders' search and remains in play. There is significant internal support and opposition for his potential candidacy and we do not know if that is something that can be overcome. Leach currently makes right around $5 million at Mississippi State and, if that is the upper limits of what Texas Tech is willing to pay, there may not be much of a pay increase on the table if he chose to make the move. There is a state law in Mississippi that limits all public contracts to a max term of four years, so while Texas Tech may not be able to offer a substantial pay increase, it could offer a longer contract and therefore more guaranteed money.
