CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Jay Bateman's tenure as North Carolina’s defensive coordinator is over, the school confirmed on Friday. UNC and Bateman have mutually decided to part ways after a three-year run that failed to meet expectations following a promising stint at Army.

Inside Carolina reported on Thursday that Bateman was not expected to remain on staff for the 2022 season, citing frustration on both sides with the defensive performance this season.

UNC finished its worst defensive season since 2014 with an abysmal performance in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Dec. 30. South Carolina rolled up 543 total yards of offense at an 8.2 yards-per-play rate, both season highs, and the Gamecocks’ 38 points were nearly double their season average.

Brown reflected on the state of the defense in his postgame press conference following the Tar Heels' 38-21 loss to South Carolina: "There's a lot of great freshmen and sophomores out there that need to get older, and they'll play better next year. But we as coaches, we've got to look at everything we're doing and seeing why. Our game plan was 100 percent stop the run today and they rushed for 301 yards. So, it is what it is."

Awful P4 DC and could probably out eat Tickle Me:
