"You can't carve rotten wood."

This was a famous saying uttered by the Executive Director of my fraternity's national office, referring to the importance of recruiting young men of the right character, skills, etc. There is only so much you can do with individuals who are relatively talentless and uncoachable.

-Many of the upperclassmen on this team are rotten wood
-The majority of the coaching staff are inexperienced carvers
-Tech needs better wood, and the carvers need more experience

I've watched the coaches put players in the position to succeed, only to have the players fail due to lack of skill and lack of effort. Endless dropped passes, endless missed assignments and overpursuits, endless broken tackles, etc. I have also watched the coaching staff make mistakes with questionable play calls or mysterious formations. I definitely question the strength and conditioning program. And I wish the coaches would get on the players a little bit more when they continue to make stupid decisions after 3 years in the program.

But at the end of the day it is the players who primarily control the results on the field. And many of the older players, especially on both sides of the line and one receiver in particular, seem utterly disinterested. Smith can't play hard for the D-line, Hays can't play smart for the O-line, and Kingsbury can't make the receivers catch the ball.

You can't carve rotten wood.
