...in the end, you are what your record says you are.........
Can you though? Let's look at the Big 12.
Someone in another thread posted this statement as if it were a fact so I decided to use the Big 12 as an example since the Big 12 is so near and dear to our hearts. I didn't want this to stay buried in a thread nothing about this so decided to post it in its own thread.
I assumed most would consider 3 pt wins or losses as games that could go either way.
tcu lost one game by 3 pts or less and won one by 3 pts or less. Wash
isu lost three by 3 pts or less and won two by 3 pts or less. Almost a wash
bu won three by 3 pts or less and lost one by 3 pts or less. Way ahead.
Tech lost four by 3 pts or less and won ZERO by 3 pts or less. Way behind
ksu lost one and won one by 3 pts or less. Wash
ku lost one and won one by 3 pts or less. Wash
ut won two by 3 pts or less and lost one by 3 pts or less. Almost a wash
osu did not lose or win any by 3 pts or less. N/A
wvu lost one and won one by 3 pts or less. Wash
ou won two by 3 pts or less and lost ZERO by 3 pts or less. Way ahead.
So no, just by 3 pts or less, which most woulda considered a game that coulda gone either way, and not even including all the OT games Tech had, your record does not say what you are. Tech lost FOUR games by 3 pts or less and won none of those close games. While everyone else in the conference either broke close to even on close games or came out way ahead (bu).
Consider, if Tech goes 3-1 like bu (who won two of their close games in triple OT) in those close games instead of 0-4 Tech finishes the season 7-5. Win all four like ou and you finish 8-4. Break even like most teams did and you make a bowl game.
