I read this article detailing semi-recent analysis by Disqus about whether people mainly prefer pseudonyms or real names online. I can see legitimate reasons why like when being a whistleblower or when having a controversial opinion might affect one's job status. Though one of the reasons mentioned in the article "A pseudonym let's me be me without revealing my identity" reinforces to me that some people are just assholes.
