So I was reflecting on the conservative and right wing media freakout over Juneteenth becoming a holiday. I was also thinking about the numerous white people I've encountered that think it's "for black people" and July 4th is "for everyone."
My question is why do conservatives and many non conservative white people feel this way? Why is it black people can, and do, celebrate July 4th, but maby conservatives absolutely freaked about Juneteenth?
The declaration of independence and constitution literally had no inclusion of black people at all. We were still slaves and the Supreme Court ruled (as it was practiced) in Dredd Scott that black people were not citizens, could not be citizens, and that the Constitution did not apply to us. In fact, black people would have been much better off if the British had won the war.
Conversely, Juneteenth was the beginning of what was essentially another 100 year journey towards freedom for black people, and the march towards freedom and equality for everyone.
So why is it so many conservatives expect black people to support all things Juky 4th, even though it literally did NOTHING for them, but they can't support a new holiday that benefited the country by ending an horrific slavery practice?
Serious question. Not trying to jab conservatives. And yes, the freakout on conservative TV and radio was real. And the only people to vote against it were conservatives. Sadly, I have no doubts the "no" vote would have been much higher if not for the optics it would have sent.
