The when was the last time thread got to me to thinking of when was the first time I was in Jones Stadium:
It was 1966, the year AD (After Donny Anderson). I was 8 years old. We lived about 3 hours away. My parents, both Tech alums, would go to one game a year, usually homecoming. Tech played SMU, which would win the Southwest Conference title that year.
I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen. When you are a young boy, everything seems bigger. There were probably 40,000 there, but it seemed like 140,000. In that era, Tech students had a card section, and I'd watch them things change like a kaleidoscope. Tech band seemed like covered the entire field.
This was back when you could also smoke in the stadium. Many men had cigars. To this day, cigar smoke reminds me of football. People also dressed up a lot more. You saw a lot of men in coat and tie, and women in dresses. I was already hooked on Tech football from the year before, with Anderson, in my first year to really understand football. But I was really hooked after that. It's never left.
You?
