Red Raiders prepare for Kansas

KLIFF KINGSBURY

•Kingsbury said he's "not sure" why Texas Tech doesn't have a bye week this season. "It just worked out that way."

•"I know they're very well coached, being familiar with coach (David) Beaty. [...] They're a well-coached team and anybody in the Big 12 can beat anybody in any given week."

•Kingsbury said Beaty is a "tremendous recruiter" that's "trying to build something special" in Lawrence.

•"We're talking about starting the second half of the season the right way."

•Kingsbury said that Tony Morales was still "a little rusty" on Saturday but praised him for his effort.

•Kingsbury on Mahomes' highlight, scramble touchdown pass to Jakeem Grant: "On the headset, it was like, "No, no, no... Yes" dialogue. It was one of those."

•"We are still a work in progress offensively playing all of those young wide receivers."

•Kingsbury said that Devin Lauderdale will be back this week, looks like Dylan Cantrell will end up redshirting.

DAVID GIBBS

•"For whatever reason, we have no consistency. We misalign. We miss tackles. We do all the things bad defenses do. Until we learn to line up right and keep doing your job and do the little things, we'll continue to struggle."

•"We need to continue to work on the fundamentals of stance, alignment, technique. So, really, not pleased in any aspect. In my mind, we're not playing up to our potential, which comes back to coaching."

•"We're usually pretty good about making adjustments during the game, but for whatever reason they're not showing up until the second half."

•Gibbs they need to do a better job of coaching, a better job of recruiting and the players need to do a better job of playing.

•"Players' effort has been awesome. I thought they played well, they really did."

•"Any kind of stop for me is a miracle. I'll take it. ... I was kidding."

•"We need to worry about ourselves. I said this this morning. Everybody runs the same plays. [...] All these geniuses run the same plays every week."

ERIC MORRIS

•"If we don't turn the ball over, it's going to be hard to stop us."

•Morris said Jonathan Giles needs to be tougher in the run game. "That's the only knock on him that I have right now."

•"(Mahomes is) pretty special. It's fun to watch him create these plays."

•Morris said that KU's secondary is actually "pretty good." [...] "They're not as bad as some of the scores show."

•"I thought we had the best practice last week that we've had since Arkansas."

•Morris said the offense runs scramble drills more now than Texas Tech ever has since he's been involved with the program.

•"I've never seen a quarterback throw it as accurately as he does going left."

Recruiting Roundup

With the commitment of Rivals100 prospect Jack Anderson, it is only a matter of time before Tech starts bringing in some other big-named players for the 2017 class. One recruit that was impacted by Anderson's commitment was Richmond (Texas) Travis offensive lineman, Will Farrar. Farrar already had high interest in the Red Raiders before Anderson's commit- he visited Lubbock for the Tech vs. Sam Houston State game-but due to his very close relationship with the Frisco o-lineman, Farrar's interest in Tech has perked up. Farrar immediately heard from Anderson following his commitment saying that Anderson told him 'Now it is your turn.' The 6-foot-4, 295-pound lineman has built up a very close relationship with Tech offensive line coach Lee Hays as well. - See more at: https://texastech.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1813126&PT=4&PR=2#sthash.9dHJNsxx.dpuf

With the departure of senior outside linebacker Pete Robertson drawing closer, Texas Tech defensive coordinator David Gibbs will need to find a fitting replacement. One prospect who could possibly fill that role is Lufkin (Texas) defensive end Bronson Massie. The 6-foot-4, 210 defender speaks with linebacker coach Zac Spavital on a consistent basis. Texas Tech hasn't offered Massie yet, but he'd be willing to plug them at the top of his list if the opportunity was given to him. He currently holds offers from Cal, Colorado State, Louisiana Tech, SFA, Texas State and Washington. - See more at: https://texastech.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1813617&PT=4&PR=2#sthash.h3Hlsesq.dpuf

Albuquerque (N.M.) Valley defensive end Teton Saltes currently holds eight offers, but is beginning to hear more from Texas, Tennessee and Arizona State among others. As far as Texas Tech, Saltes said he continues to hear from coaches every few weeks and is still receiving mail and messages on Twitter. Saltes would like to visit the South Plains, but right now an in-season visit is looking more and more unlikely. The only official visit Saltes has planned right now is a trip to Iowa State at the end of the month for the Cyclones' game against Texas. - See more at: https://texastech.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1813657&PT=4&PR=2#sthash.jApiKXBQ.dpuf

Kliff Kingsbury's offensive scheme meshes well with compact receivers that can create plays after the catch. That's exactly why Texas Tech offered Cedar Hill 2017 wide receiver Jaylon Jackson. The Rivals four-star prospect thinks highly of the Red Raiders. In fact, he currently lists Texas Tech as one of his top choices. Jackson recently visited the South Plains this season with teammates, and was thoroughly impressed by the atmosphere and the coaching staff. - See more at: https://texastech.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1813971&PT=4&PR=2#sthash.5rKP7DuB.dpuf
