Texas Tech preps for UTEP
- Kliff Kingsbury heads into the second week of the season with a 1-0 record after a shootout with Sam Houston State.
Patrick Mahomes wins the Big 12 Player of the Week Award after passing for 425 yards and four scores against the Bearkats. Defense was a question, surrendering more than 600 yards of defense.
- "I liked that we started fast offensively and I thought there was a time there with three minutes left in the third there was about an eight-nine minute stretch where we got up 59-31 I believe. Had some good things happening on both sides of the ball and I thought about the last 15 minutes we kind of floundered around and didn't do much. I felt we got complacent and that was discouraging. But I thought we started fast, we had some good football within the game but we have a lot of areas we need to improve on." – Kingsbury on Offense
- "I think they faced a good offense, had 10 guys on the offense that was a semifinalist. it was going fast for some of them and didn't handle the tempo very well. Didn't get guys down in space very well. But it's a learning experience. Created turnovers, which is something we harped on the entire camp, won the turnover battle. So there are some positives but lots of room for improvement." – Kingsbury on Defense
- Kingsbury gives a lot of credit to Sam Houston State for coming out in the first half and jumping on them, said in the first half they were rolling and Tech adjusted well in the second half.
- Texas Tech will play UTEP this week, which played Arkansas last week, Kingsbury said they will not use this game as a barometer on how they will do against Arkansas in a few weeks. Every game is different every week.
- Kingsbury said their rush defense will be tested this week going against a very good rushing attack from UTEP.
- "Really guys up front need to play better, linebackers need to tackle in space and just continue to grow as a unit."
- New Mexico isn't the most fertile ground for recruiting top-level talent but there are some good players that pop up in the state from time-to-time. Albuquerque (N.M.) Valley defensive end Teton Saltes is one of just a handful of FBS talents that will come out of the state this year, and he already holds an offer from Texas Tech. The three-star defensive end was offered by the Red Raiders back in May and is still in contact with the program. The defensive ends reports that he receives various hand-written letters from the coaches and heard from defensive line coach Mike Smith last week.
- With four offensive line commits already in the fold for the 2016 recruiting class, recruiting for this position group has slowed down quite a bit for the Red Raiders for the time being. However, Texas Tech remains in contact with a handful of targets, including blue-chip offensive tackle Tramonda Moore of Oklahoma City John Marshall. Several schools are recruiting the 5.7 three-star pretty heavily, including Alabama, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Florida State and Miami. So far, it looks as if Alabama and Florida State will get an official visit while he sits down with his family and friends to finalize the other three. He does not currently hold an offer, but offensive line coach Lee Hays remains in contact with him via text and has asked him to come to Lubbock to check out a game or two.
- In Friday's 52-49 loss to Lufkin, Tyler Lee senior athlete Zach Hall showed what he is capable of when fully healthy. Coming off a week of battling a stomach virus, Lee passed for 330 yards, while rushing for 230 yards and racking up five total touchdowns, three passing and two rushing. Hall's top five includes Baylor, Missouri, TCU, SMU and Texas Tech. Right now, Lee is focusing on his senior season and hasn't been working on planning official visits. Despite that, Lee did say he will try and make a visit to Lubbock before the season is over. Lee said when he last heard from coaches at Texas Tech they would want to use him at corner or slot.
