...to fill up with 3* and higher high school Texas talent to finally get this defense at a Power 5 talent and depth level.
In 2013 we committed 9 defensive athletes still on the team.
In 2014 we committed 9 defensive athletes still on the team.
In 2015 we committed 7 defensive athletes still on the team.
The 2016 class has 14 defensive athletes verbally committed.
That is 39 defensive athletes still on the team or verbally committed to join the team.
They breakdown as: 2x4* 22x3* and 15x2*
By position: 8xDT 7xDE 9xLB 9xDB and 6xATH
As a reminder: 2* athletes are regarded as Mid Major talent with little to no Power 5 interest. 2* athletes at the Power 5 level are typically project-type players and/or aren't expected to improve much other than maturing. It should be noted that late bloomers do exist.
The point: if we are going to improve on the defensive side of the ball, it has less to do right now with the in-game coaching and more to do with how we finish this class, recruit the next class and develop the players. The offense is truly good to great. It will take time to fix the defense. We do need change. We need change in the roster. It is coming. We need to shift away from the 22 to 15 ratio of 3* to 2*. Ideally we should be closer to 3 to 1. I wouldn't change the staff up just yet but holding their feet to the fire is totally understandable and anything less is unacceptable and unworthy of our university. Here's to hoping that they fix this.
