RedRaiderSports was on hand Tuesday evening for the Wakeland @ Memorial basketball game, to see future Texas Tech basketball commit Drew Steffe.

In the stands that night was another Red Raider target, but for football. Wakeland tight end Tripp Riordan is one of the top targets at the position for tight ends coach Josh Cochran and head coach Joey McGuire, and Riordan will be heading down to Lubbock for Junior Day this coming weekend.

What you need to know...

... Riordan announced his offer from Texas Tech on January 12th
... Since then, he's picked up additional offers from Kansas, Vanderbilt, Minnesota and Colorado
... Per the Wakeland Wolverine Football site, Riordan put up 17 catches for 296 yards and five (5) touchdowns in 2021.
... Riordan was named to the District 5-5A 1st Team offense following his junior season

What the Texas Tech offer meant to him: "It felt good to get the offer. I do prefer the Big 12. I think the SEC would be a good choice too if some more schools came along but the Big 12 is probably where I'll end up at. It feels great to have Texas Tech jump in the pot with me.

Big school, they're turning it around with Joey McGuire as their coach. I like the tight end coach (Josh Cochran) a ton, he's a good guy. I can't wait to get on campus this weekend."

Texas Tech coaches: "Actually I just got done texting coach Cochran today. We were actually talking about Vanderbilt and Kansas hopping in too, offering me. It was pretty funny. Although they see the competition with other schools they still keep it common, it's really cool. No other coach has really done that. So it feels good to have a coach always there to talk to."

Recent visit to North Texas: "It was really good honestly. Obviously UNT, they went 6-6, they went and played in a bowl game. It's pretty cool. What amazed me the most was honestly their coach, coach (Adrian) Mayes. That dude is a good coach. He's coached everywhere from Ohio State to the Chargers, he's been anywhere but he said what he likes the most is college because he gets to teach it rather than manage in the pro leagues.

It was just really cool for a coach to take time and teach me how UNT runs their routes and how they'll utilize me in their program."

Upcoming Texas Tech visit: "Honestly I'm looking forward to seeing just the program in general, the weight room, the stadium. I'm excited to take the pictures, those are always the best. I'm just excited to meet all the coaches and just see what they're all about."

Commitment timeline: "To be honest I really don't know that much. I don't want to close off my recruitment and lose a school that could have been the school, if that makes sense. Summer would be an ideal time to have an understanding of a top three, top five but no, I'm not gonna close it down until I have a for sure school that I'm ready to go to."

Offseason 7v7: "Yeah, I'm playing for 940 Elite. Peyton Bowen and Eli Bowen are playing on that team so a bunch of good recruits on there."

Things he wants to get better at: "Really just working on my route running and speed in general. I feel like I'm a pretty physical tight end, obviously there's more to work on in the physical game but that's something I do pretty well at.

I really just have to be able to beat safeties one-on-one, linebackers of course. If I'm able to out-speed a linebacker and out-jump a safety, I mean there's not really anybody that can stop that so that would be a really big deal for me, as well as wash down the defensive end. That's pretty huge and just be able to dominate the game anywhere from run to pass."
