... The focus offensively this spring is on limiting penalties, especially pre-snap penalties, and reducing turnovers. The Red Raiders didn't turn the ball over on Saturday -- Pat Mahomes threw a would-be interception but it was negated by a defensive penalty -- and didn't have as many penalty issues as they did in their first scrimmage before spring break.

... Pat Mahomes has protected the football well so far this spring. You heard David Gibbs kind of allude to this in his post-practice comments yesterday. Gibbs speaks very higly of Mahomes' decision making.

... The offense is still going to lean heavily on Jakeem Grant, but the hope and expectation is that he will be more consistent this season. He made plays for the team in 2014, but also dropped more balls than any other receiver.

... Former Texas Tech running back Sammy Morris has spent the last few days around the football program.

... If the Red Raiders had an actual game tomorrow, walk-on wide receivers Zach Austin and Ja'Deion High would both be in the rotation. Austin, as things stand right now, is the fifth receiver in the offense's empty sets, and High is emerging as the next young Jordan Davis-type.

... Don't be surprised if you see Brad Pearson work some at H-back if the offense goes with a two tight end set.

... Keep your fingers crossed, but Tony Morales has looked good so far this spring. He has never played or traveled with the team in his four seasons on campus, but the hope is that he can contribute this fall. There's some thought that he will be able to apply for and receive a medical hardship waiver.

... Early returns on Justin Murphy are positive. The same goes with Robert Castaneda, but he's a bit raw and needs to get stronger.

... The plan defensively is to play and rotate at least eight defensive in games this fall. David Gibbs doesn't want anyone playing 80 snaps.

... This isn't really a surprise given the league, but look for the Red Raiders to play a lot of Nickel this fall. During the first scrimmage, Micah Awe and Sam Atoe worked at linebacker in this set.

... I think Texas Tech feels better about its situation at corner right now than at safety.

... Early returns on Breiden Fehoko have been very positive but he's still learning and adjusting to Big 12-caliber football.

... The following players did not participate yesterday: Gary Moore, Taylor Symmank, Joseph Clark, Davis Webb, J.J. Gaines, Tony Morales, Baylen Brown, Donte Phillips, Jah'Shawn Johnson, Jakari Dillard.

... Don't be surprised if the Red Raiders look to add another JUCO offensive lineman to their 2015 class along with Paul Stawarz.
