I was listening to XM84 a few days ago and Andy Staples was talking about the transfer portal and how it is a lot more complicated than the media is talking about, and more complicated than disgruntled players think it is.
Staples wrote a story in February detailing the issues and the #1 issue is room. Transfers count just like signees. So if a school SIGNS 25 players, they can't even accept a transfer from the portal. That can severely limit options, much more than what players think. It also means that schools like Alabama, Clemson, etc., have to be very selective.
It also makes me think that Kliff/staffs strategy of leaving a few spots open for transfers MIGHT have been more well thought out than we initially considered. Imagine a 4* recruit who is looking at options. Maybe Texas Tech isn't what he was looking for, but after talking to schools and finding out School A & B don't have enough room, and school C & D don't have a need at his position... maybe that 4* recruit is looking at Texas Tech and some G5 schools. It doesn't seem like it resulted in getting said 4* recruit, but it looks like the Tech staff took a risk by allowing themselves the position to be the BEST option for some talented transfers. Unfortunately, the knock on "can the coaches recruit?" may have also hindered this process, too.
Regardless, it's a fascinating dynamic with the transfer portal that doesn't get discussed. But, also consider, if the transfer portal continues to grow, and more/better players take it as an option, perhaps your top schools will start signing only 22-23 kids, so that they can have room for the AA caliber player.
