Cruising along to early church this morning not thinking or paying attention and got pulled over (78 in a 60). I knew they frequented that area, just listening to Dire Straits and grooving to the tune instead of watching the roadside and shadows.
When the police officer returned to my vehicle with the ticket, he asks my profession...I told him general dentist. He'd read my license (same as my RRS handle). He said he didn't like giving tickets to doctors since they serve the community in so many ways. He then told me, "set a court date, don't pay the ticket". He said it twice, then asked me to sign the ticket, tore it off the pad and said once again to set a court date. I thanked him, we shook hands, and that was that.
So I take it he was telling me he will not show up for the court date. So what do I do? Should I trust him at his word, even though I don't know the man at all? What if he does show up?!
I haven't had a ticket in quite a while now, so all options are open to me, including deferred adjudication and defensive driving to keep it off my record. On the other hand, I'm not looking to pay another bill if I don't have to...but neither do I want to see my insurance go up if he shows for trial.
What would you do? Are there other risks i haven't analyzed.
