Steven Weinberg has a new book out TO EXPLAIN THE WORLD
it is an amazing read. Explaining nature through the ages and where we are today.
He takes on "purpose" and explains that there is no purpose and how we understand that now, how we got to understand that and that we might be at the end of where we can go to understand the natural world. (this is of course upsetting to supernatural creature believers)
From understanding that biology has no natural laws to follow but that biology follows evolution which has no fundamental laws.
He does explain that physics is not finished but that in our lifetimes we could be near the end of our understanding.
He talks about unification and how the laws of physics began to unfold in the Hellenistic era and how that flowering began after the Greek Classical period .
He does talk about the rise of Christianity and his thoughts are fascinating
He discusses the growth of science and how we think now in a serious way about our present theories of the natural world.
He explains in an easy to understand way, how we went from Classical Mechanics to quantum mechanics about 100 years ago. How the world knows these quantum laws are real ...they are reality and why he thinks most of the world is still in the Iron Age with belief in supernatural nonsense we have no evidence for.
He talks about ideas that you might not think about on how the ancient world thought. such as no one knew the world was moving. everyone believed the world was flat but the ignorance of that world is breathtaking to us today. Gods, spirits and demons were everywhere.....as they are today. An amazing fact how the ignorance thousands of years ago still haunts us today
So in a very elagant way Professor Weinberg explains what the fundemental nature of our world is. Are we alive because of supernatural creatures or the result of infinite energy and laws that because of quantum fluctuations randomly will explode into universes that can develop life for no reason at all?
