Humans not only have thousands of gods to choose from but we also invent thousands of spirits. One of our favorites here in American is the tooth fairy. The Fairy was originally brought over from Europe but in time has turned into an American fairy as many began to put children's lost teeth under their pillow. This tradition has now been adopted all over the world. The Tooth fairy is very real to little children like thousands of spirits are to adults. The human capacity to invent spirits is limitless and something we have done for thousands of years.
The idea of making up spirits, gods, devils and fairies explains why so many are easily convinced that their local wood spirit is real. The death and rebirth of a tooth or the human itself drives many to cling to these ancient beliefs.
Our introduction to the supernatural and all its inhabitants begins in childhood. We are introduced to local non threatening fairies like this one and then introduced to our local god. Here in America we as children are not given a choice of gods but most of us are told we are a "christian" child. It is easy to move on from the tooth fairy to believing that a long ago Jewish Zealot was a god, and you can pray to him and he will one day come back and take you away.
Science of course and Common sense have rendered these myths moot, but many of us still cling to these childhood myths.
Most spirits are fun but never forget that humans also come up with devils and demons and such.
They use them to scare little kids to behave and what not.
