I'll start this by saying that there is nothing that I love more than coaching searches and nothing that I loathe more than conventional lazy approaches to them. In that spirit, I have been ruminating on some names that I have not seen mentioned, and there is one I keep coming back to (no, not Troy Calhoun who won 11 games the year after I suggested hiring him last time). It's actually Calhoun's former boss Gary Kubiak. I know that the Joey McGuire/Art Briles train has left the station for many here, but let's take a look since Kirby has given us a lot of time to wait:

Many here agree that they would be happy with about 8 wins a year and an occasional run at the playoffs, well, that is exactly who Kubiak has been his entire head coaching life. He has won 8 games or more 7/10 seasons in the NFL with 3 division titles, a 5-2 postseason record, 1 Super Bowl win as a head coach and 3 as an assistant. How many current college head coaches can say they've won a Super Bowl as the head coach? The answer is none. Show the recruits your rings, coach.

Gary is widely regarded as one of the best offensive minds in all of football, but he has also served in leadership and front office roles such as the Bronco's Senior Personnel Advisor where he analyzed college prospects for the organization. Ostensibly, the guy can also find and evaluate talent is what I'm getting at here (one of his sons is also a NFL scout). He is from Texas, has deep roots in the sate, (I will not mention where he played football) and still keeps his home in the Houston area. His name will ring out among Texas High School coaches as well as across the country. In fact, one of his other sons, Klay, is a Texas High School football coach and has been at Strake Jesuit since 2018.

Sounds great, would he be interested? I think he could be persuaded. It's widely speculated that he'll be moving on from his role as OC and AHC of the Vikings this season, but he's yet to find a suitor. The same people that gave me the scoop that Urban turned down UT (before Chip and FB Scoop posted it), also are adamant that there have been conversations between UT and Kubiak. But I don't think he is a front runner. It does mean he could be open to a move back to college. He started his coaching career as the RB coach for A&M where he worked with All American Greg Hill and while he's always been out there as an option at A&M, the timing has just never been quite right. He's still only 59 years old, so he hasn't aged out by any means and I think he's ready for his next challenge.

I would be very interested to hear who he might bring as his assistants from his prodigious list of coaching contacts (his third son is on his staff at Minny). I don't think he would run our program into ground, he is not some flunky like Charlie Weiss and he has other options. But maybe a move back to Texas as the number 1 guy in charge is exactly what he's looking for.
