To me, this is the pivotal moment for Joey’s program and tenure. Everything hinges on what happens next.
Im not saying you have to win in Ames, but you need to have a radical adjustment in how you are approaching these games.
In every game this year where we’ve won or had a chance to win, we’ve had a point we’re up by 2 possessions. In all those games, we have lacked a killer instinct. We get conservative, and we let teams back in all these games. We’ve been fortunate enough to win most of those so far this year, but today, it bit us HARD, obviously.
This team is not built to get ahead and sit on people. Your secondary is beat to hell, and you can’t produce a consistent pass rush without creating pressure creatively.
Your offensive line is a roller coaster in the run game, and you can’t just line up and get 5 yards a carry to close games out. Doesn’t matter how good your RBs are if you can’t open holes for them consistently.
However, this team is improved in pass pro, actually quite a bit better than the last two years.
With all that information:
-Hammond is a DUDE. Give him the keys, give him confidence, and let him sling it. And he can make plays with his feet. The Hammond era has to start now.
-This cannot be the Tahj show. I love him as much as any one of yall, good lord I love him, but the O-line is not good enough for him to play patient runner and find 4-6 yards consistently. Defenses have it totally figured out, and Tahj just does not have the burst or gear to break loose.
-This offense has to become aggressive, and like in year 1 under Joey, they have to take risks, utilize your QB’s ability to gain a first down with his feet, and you CANNOT play this scared style of offense. CD, Kelly, Hudson, and Conyers are all guys you can get aggressive with and hunt mismatches for.
-JKoby Williams, hello. Get him the ball. He almost always does something really good with the ball in his hands. Give it to him on jet sweeps. He’s a playmaker. We need to be manufacturing plays for playmakers.
-Defensively, we have to continue to focus on manufacturing pass rush through blitzes. We have an infirmary for the secondary right now. They can’t cover anyone. Damn the torpedoes and live and die with your aggression.
Play aggressive football. We did it in year 1. Do it again.
And when we get to the offseason, go pay for two pass rushers and 2 O-linemen.
