The # of stars matters because...

It seems to me that at least a few posters on here are concerned about the stars of our recruits, but not for the same reasons.

I think some are a little scared about the recruits' potential and are nervous about the soundness of the coaching staff's evaluations. The lower rated recruits being a bigger gamble. Higher ratings are thus safer.

Others seem to be less concerned about the skills and abilities of the recruits, but are more concerned about the signal taking a 2 star for instance has on landing other future recruits. Thus underrated commits is a major concern.

I think there is one more group that is primarily concerned about the class ranking. I think this group wants to "win" the recruiting game. Overall class rank is akin to the polls(ap & coaches). They love beating other schools for a commitment. This group may be prone to water cooler gloating over a 4 star. Lightly recruited commits are thus no fun because they aren't much of a victory.

I'm sure there are other types too. Why do you care about the number of stars?
