3. Terrence Shannon Jr., Texas Tech
An elite wing defender who might’ve been a first-round pick if he stayed in the draft, Shannon came back to school hoping to show off a bit more polish to the rest of his game. The former top-100 recruit was a Big 12 All-Freshman honoree in 2020 and third-team All-Big 12 in 2021; our expert on that league, CJ Moore, picked him to be a first-teamer in 2022. Among Big 12 players with at least 20 percent usage last season, Shannon had the best offensive rating. Per Synergy Sports, he’s also one of the most suffocating defenders, allowing just 0.741 points per possession in man-to-man possessions. He was one of five finalists for the Julius Erving Award (top small forward) after averaging 12.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.1 steals and shooting 35.7 percent from 3 as a sophomore, and there’s a real sense that he’s just getting started.
