Coming off of the 38-3 home win over the UTEP Miners, some on RRS range from curious to concerned about our new look offense. Questions remain and are intensified about our depth at OLine without RG Jack Anderson and LT Terence Steele, as well as, Alan Bowman's ability to hit the deep ball.
Through the first 2 games, Alan Bowman is 70/98 71.4% 696 yards 5 TD 1 INT with 7 rushes 14 yards 2.0 avg 1TD.
Some fans are questioning his arm strength and already complaining like it's 2000 all over again with the "dink and dunk" offense. They are also saying that Alan's program best accuracy is just a product of all of the short throws and that he's not very good past 10-15 yards.
Let's look at his performance versus UTEP:
30/45 66.7% 260 yards 3 TD 1 INT 1 Sack 3 rushes 7 yards 2.3 avg 0 TD
26/32 81.3% with 2 drops on throws under 10 yards. This accounted for 194 yards 2 TD 0 INT.
Alan is VERY efficient running the offense.
Now the vertical game:
Passes 10-15 yards: 3/4 75.0% 36 yards 0 TD 1 INT
(Myller Royals should have at least made a play for the ball.)
Passes 16-29 yards: 0/1
(Where are the middle routes in this offense?)
Passes 30-39 yards: 1/4 25.0% 30 yards 1 TD 0 INT
(The TD to Vasher was $$$. The miss of a wide open Rigdon was terrible. Alan knew it. He needed to put some air under the ball. RJ Turner caught the 30 yard pass but just barely missed staying in bounds.)
Passes 40+: 0/1
(Hail Mary at the end of the 1st Half.)
So, 4/10 40.0% 66 yards 1 TD 1 INT
Not bad but not good. The INT should have never happened. Ezukanma dropped a 36 yard pass on the opening drive (which by the way was a 2nd week with a GREAT opening drive). Turner just barely missed hauling in a 30 yard pass to the 2 yard line. Bowman wishes he had the wide open Dalton Rigdon attempt.
We were just barely off on some very nice big chunk plays. We definitely need to and will clean that up.
A couple of things that the stats don't show:
Alan Bowman had 3 "deep" throw away balls on bad protection situations. Better than taking a sack.
He also threw 2 balls to KeSean Carter that both resulted in Pass Interference penalties against the Miners. Eventually the two will hook up on a deep ball but drawing PI's is also a very good result.
Randoms:
TJ Vasher is an absolute monster for a DB to have to cover. Both TDs demonstrated just how much.
I really, really, really like Armand Shyne.
In conclusion, Yost, Bowman, and the Tech vertical game needs to improve for sure, but it sure isn't as bad as some of you guys act or think. I've been around RRS for 12+ years and around Tech since 1984. As much as I'd like to blame some of your posts on the amazing new beer sales at the Jones, I have just had to accept that some of you just don't have an idea what you're seeing or talking about.
