I was 9 years old when Kirk Douglas made the Movie Spartacus. I recently saw the restored film. I knew little of Rome or it's history of course when the film came out but it captured my imagination and I began reading about Rome soon after. So much colorful history during that short period. Julius Caesar was alive at that time. Crassus the Richest man in Rome went after Spartacus. He was to get himself killed along with his army not long afterword in the sands of what is Syria now. Pompey the Great was alive and was in the final battle. These names still ring throughout history and always will. Odd how History is at times....Caesar went on to cross the Rubicon and meet Cleopatra......yet one of Rome's greatest generals who had years before destroyed Hannibal is nowhere near as well known if at all. Scipio Africans as he would become known. He destroyed Carthage.
I recommend the Kirk Douglas movie if you have never seen it. Sir Larwence Olivier plays Marcus Licinius Crassus in it and the movie is worth watching for his performance alone. He is Rome in that movie and he is so wonderful he takes you back 2000 years.
I have always had a love affair with Rome....She stood for 2000 years....not as long as the Egyptian Empire but much of our lives today still resonate with Roman history.....Egyptian history was so different than what we are today. Rome adopted Grecian Gods and embraced most religions within the empire but she was a Republic for a 1000 years also.
