President Yoon has struggled to get anything through Parliament. He's blamed the opposition, who he accuses of being soft on North Korea. So he declared martial law.

The South Korean President declared martial law to remove pro-North Korean elements. In an emergency address, he claimed martial law was necessary to protect SK's liberal democratic order from what he termed "pro-North Korean anti-state forces."

The last time South Korea was under martial law was in 1980, during the Chun Doo-hwan dictatorship.

Democratic Party lawmakers are gathering at the National Assembly right now. The police and the security forces are physically blocking the entrance.

Lawmakers are now gathering inside the national assembly to vote down martial law as soon as they have the numbers, at which the point the military will likely have no other option but to stand down.
