I am very excited about this hire, and am optimistic about the direction of our program for the first time in a long while.

I can give personal testimony to the fact that Sonny is not only a great coach, but he’s also a great person. He will do a great job of helping to build the program the right way, and will be a great teacher and mentor to our guys.

A few things that ran through my head, as this possibility developed...

We would have won 2 or 3 more games this season if we’d had Sonny.

I’m very excited to see what Sonny can do when he has full control of an offense.

Sonny will be able to bring excitement and enthusiasm to the field, which is something we’ve been missing on the offensive side of the ball.

I am glad that we are moving back toward a more open scheme, that will better position us to utilize the skill position talent we have on the roster.

I hope that Sonny is able to make some offensive staff changes, and bring in a couple of “his guys”. We have some weaknesses, and Sonny needs (and deserves) to have the guys that know how to coach his offense.

Sonny will be a big help with recruiting. He has very good relationships across the state, and is very well respected by Texas HS coaches. I also think it will be helpful that we are re-embracing an “identity”, that we’ve lost in the last couple of years.

Sonny understands Texas Tech. He understands the inherent strengths and weaknesses and knows what it takes to be successful in Lubbock. He will be a big help to Wells in this way.

Guns up!!
