1. Hocutt makes the overwhelming fanbase favorite/appeasing hire of Kliff Kingsbury. However he does not make Kliff hiring any sort of grizzled veteran DC or associate HC type to glean information off of or help with game day prep etc.
2. Gives Kliff an insane extension guaranteeing a huge chunk of his salary after Year 1. Now Kliff was the talk of CFB after the first 7 weeks of the season going 7-0 and ultimately ending the year 8-5 and with Webb’s incredible true freshman coming out party against ASU in the Holiday Bowl. However, I’m not sure how realistic it was for Kliff to be offered much more job opportunities and how realistic it would have been for Kliff to leave.
3. Is the one man search party for the replacement to Kliff. Goes rogue on the Dana interview (and look I’m not mad we didn’t hire Dana - I flat out don’t believe he was the guy - but agreeing to go interview him and backing out at the last second is eeesh). Hires a G5 coach with a very iffy resume and allows the coach to bring his G5 staff with him with. Letting Emmitt Jones go and a few commits along with it. Having zero true Texas ties into his initial coaching staff.
4. Is rumored to be ready to fire Wells after the 2020 season, but stops short because of the optics in regards to Beard not being able to hire an assistant coach and pay cut Beard was forced to take.
5. Allows Beard to hem and haw for over a week just to drag out to the date so that a reduction of the buyout could occur. Beard is asshole - I’m not defending Beard here, just pointing out Kirby’s inabilities.
6. Hires a search firm for Beard’s replacement just to hire interim coach Mark Adams 3 days later. Now it looks like so far this will be a home run hire, but how much damn money did Kirby spend just to hire the guy down the hallway after a long weekend? Lmao
7. Still has us playing in the Big 12 for the foreseeable future. This may not be his fault, but what the hell? He has dragged our football team down to the depths of hell and can’t get us an invite to the PAC 12? Why are we still paying this jabroni?
8. Let’s not even get into the WBB Stalings disaster and the Gregory sham of a firing.
Like I’m not necessarily even in the camp that Kirby needs to be fired, but man his track record is filled with blunders and absolutely getting things put over on him by agents and coaches themselves. The one thing I know for certain is - when Wells is fired in a couple of months - Kirby should not be more than an observing party in the search for a new CFB HC. He can sit in on the interviews as a virtuously and give the obligatory thumbs of approval but the next hire should 100% be made by a consulting firm
