TORONTO - Former Comets and Texas Tech star Sheryl Swoopes, a three-time WNBA MVP, was made a finalist for induction to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. The Class of 2016 will be announced April 4 in Houston.
The 10 finalists announced Friday included several with Texas ties. In addition to former Rockets star Yao Ming, who was already a finalist, and Swoopes, former Granbury High School coach Leta Andrew and former Fort Worth Dunbar coach Robert Hughes were made finalists. Former Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal, who played at San Antonio Cole High School, and the 10-time AAU champion Wayland Baptist University team were also finalists.
Other finalists included players Allen Iverson and Kevin Johnson, coaches Lefty Driesell, Eddie Sutton, Tom Izzo, Muffet McGraw, John McLendon and Bo Ryan and former official Darell Garrettson.
NBA reporter David Aldridge, now with Turner Broadcasting and NBA.com and ESPN broadcaster Jay Bilas are the 2016 Curt Gowdy Media Award recipients.
