Was discussing the recent protests/violence with cousin and said despite the huge amount of protestors around the country, that the level of violence was not close to some of the past riots. He disagreed so I looked some up. It should be noted that all but MLK were the result of conflicts with police.
1965 Watts 34 dead 1,000 injured $40 million in damages
1867 Detroit 43 dead 2,000 injured
1967 Newark 26 dead $10 million damage
1968 MLK shot 46 dead 2,600 injured
1980 Miami 40 dead 300 injured
1992 LA riots 63 dead 1,100 buildings and $1 billion in damage
Damage estimates were based on values in the year they occurred and do not account for inflation.
Ex. The $40 million in 1965 would be much larger in todays world.
We've had smaller ones in St Louis, Baltimore, Charlotte ...
None above came close to the huge number of protestors around the country in the last weeks. Yet all the above were much more violent and costly. We're also finding that some Antifa and white supremacists infiltrated the protests to increase the level of violence and damage. In terms of deaths, injuries, and damages, evidence proves the protests we saw around the country were much more peaceful than in the past. I'm sure that those who suffered damage the last 2 weeks don't feel it was peaceful at all. But based on sheer numbers of protestors, if the level of violence had been comparable to the past riots, this country would've been ripped apart.
