Quote from the Indiana Governor about the 3/5 Compromise:
"Democrats argued some sort of terrible thing in our past, it was not, it was actually the exact opposite... the compromise was designed to make sure that justice was equal for all people and equality really meant equality for all."
This is why the Republican effort to rewrite our history and erase the achievements of non white men is so important. We will not ever reckon with the present, and society as a whole, if we lie about our past.
I am giving him the benefit of the doubt by calling it a "lie." Otherwise, he and probably other brainwashed republicans, really believe the 3/5 Compromise was really about "equality for all" and not an abomination that gave the South outsized power in the House and led the black people continuing to be slaves for another 100 years and ensuring inequality into our Constitution.
