Red Raiders Earn Program Record Six Academic All-Big 12 Selections

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech men's basketball had a program-record six selections to the 2021 Academic All-Big 12 Team with Avery Benson, Kyler Edwards, Kevin McCullar, Clarence Nadolny, Tyreek Smith and Terrence Shannon, Jr. earning the honors that were announced on Tuesday afternoon by the conference office.

Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors went to Benson (Management), Edwards (University Studies), McCullar (University Studies), Nadolny (Human Science) and Smith (Human Science) while Shannon (Human Science) was named to the Second Team. The six selections are the most the Texas Tech program has ever had in its history with five in the 2012-13 season being the previous most. A redshirt sophomore from San Antonio, McCullar is a now a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection while the other five earned the honor for the first time in their careers.

First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Along with their academic honors, Shannon was named to the All-Big 12 Third Team while McCullar and Edwards were All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selections.
The Big 12 recognized 58 student-athletes on the teams with 42 first-team honorees and 15 members on the second team. Oklahoma's Brady Manek and Read Streller were nominated with a 4.00 grade point average.
