Ironic with all the RRS posters hating on the announcement of the football contract with ACU that the Red Raiders are in Abilene today to run at ACU. A big difference is that Tech has been competing against ACU in track and field for decades. For about 5 decades, Tech got stomped by ACC/ACU in track, until Tech decided to hire the ACU track coach (Coach Kittley) and now Tech can stomp just anyone in Texas, including ACU.
This meet is low-key and many of the accepted entries for the Texas Relays next week are being held out of this meet. Still, this meet will be a big deal for many of the young kids trying to make a statement and establish themselves with the coaches. Here are some things to watch for in this meet:
This meet is low-key and many of the accepted entries for the Texas Relays next week are being held out of this meet. Still, this meet will be a big deal for many of the young kids trying to make a statement and establish themselves with the coaches. Here are some things to watch for in this meet:
- Discus - both Marcus Franklin and Happiness Okeke threw yesterday in the first round of discus throwing and will throw again today.
- Multis - Erin Lopez is looking good in the decathlon, scoring over 3,700 points on the first day of the decathlon. Rose Njoku is looking pretty good in the heptathlon, over 3,000 points on the first day of heptathlon.
- Steeplechase - Tech will have Jasmine Torres (who is still looking for an event where she can score in the Big 12) and freshmen Matthew Munoz and Reagan Mead will be running their first steeple as well.
- This will be the first meet where Darien Tennon will be competing in both the 110H and 400H - he had a terrific indoor season.
- 800 - for the women, this will be Maygen Smith's first time this year to run the 800 outdoors. With both CJ Jones (1500) and Vincent Crisp (400) running something other than the 800, it will be a chance for Steven Duran, Alec Saucedo and Christopher Scott to show their stuff.
- Hammer throw - I really want to see the women throwers, Spaniard Dorleta Armendariz-Lasa and Alexis Lewis begin to step up in a good HT field. Marcus Franklin will also be throwing the hammer for the first time this year and he could be very good.
- I hope to see Steven Champlin have a really good 400 run - he ran his PR at this meet a couple of years ago.
