There seems to be an overall thought that running an Air Raid type offense is almost a given for Tech, either with KK or with his eventual successor. The rationale goes that 7 on 7 football and Air Raid offenses have become the norm for Texas Has, and therefore that is where we should be as well.
I'd like to offer a contrarian position. When you examine the top 100 Texas HS recruits for 2017, a large percentage of them are leaving the state to play on teams which run more standard offenses...tOSU, Bama, Michigan, Stanford, ASU, Georgia, etc.
Second, Rhule comes in at BU with the reputation of running a much more conservative attack and playing defense, and within 6 weeks turns around the entire recruiting class. Granted, the three TX HS coaches he hired have helped immensely...but it doesn't change the fact that he is NOT an Air Raid coach.
My point: I think what you have to have is a solid, charismatic HC regardless of what scheme he uses. You have to have great, at least competitive, facilities to remain in the same conversation with your competition.
BUT, I do not think it makes that big a difference what scheme we run if the rest is right...as a matter of fact, it might be smart to go a different direction in order separate yourself and carve out your own identity. Food for thought as we watch this recruiting year play out and we contemplate where we go from here.
