TLDR: I'm tried of hearing Tech doesn't have a chance- F that! Guns up and Wreck Em.
After reading M.Claire Musings post while I can't argue with what he said I saw it as a real glass half empty post. Here is the Red tinted glass is half full counter point.
Here are the facts despite be the second newest of the 65 P5 schools (Miami founded 1925) Tech is almost in all categories is a top 30 school.
Student Attendance 40,322 - 22nd
Endowment $1.32 Mil 43rd
5-year Football Attendance average 56,924.60 29th
5-year Football attendance Capacity 94.16% 30th
CLC Licensing 30th
Revenue $64.85 Mil 24th
Valuation $302.01 Mil 34th
Our attendance number are really good, considering Tech are unlike many of these other large state schools that are situated near population centers. While I have no facts to back this up it would seem that 70% of atm, ou and ut tickets holders live within 3 hours drive of the stadium probably 60% of Tech’s gameday crowd live over 3 hours away and we still pack the house when the product on the field has been less than stellar.
Where atm and ut have been cranking 8,000 – 10,000 graduates a year for the past 30 years Tech has just reached that size and 20 years from now most major cites in Texas will have nearly the same number of Tech alumni in them as ut and atm have.
Tech is moving the right direction; we are not now but we will be a major force if given the opportunity.
We can set the narrative of “poor ole Tech” and “Typical Tech” or we can set the narrative of why not us. Instead, many Tech fans and alumni talk about the dust storms instead of all the things that make Lubbock great like the most beautiful campus in the country, West Texas sunsets and the amazing people of West Texas. We seem to take pride and make jokes of how bad of fans we can be instead of point out the caring and giving nature of our fanbase – look at the scholarships this board alone has created.
As M. Clare pointed out there are plenty of reasons for Tech to get left behind, if you look for them you can find them and it wouldn’t even be hard. However in spite of what many of the pundits say, Tech has been a valuable brand, you could put Tech in any conference and while it may not be the bell cow like ut or ou it would never be the dead weight the pundits would like us to think it would be.
And he is right we haven't gotten the top 10 recruiting classes and we probably wont in the future. That's not who we are we don't get the superstars, we get the grinders, the guys that just want the chance to prove themselves, Wes Welker, Zach Thomas, Gabe Rivera, EJ Holub, Donnie Anderson, Billy Joe Toliver, Michael Crabtree, Kliff Kingsbury and Graham Harrell to name a few.
