NIL Collectives

With the NCAA’s recent advisory re: NIL, I’ll be interested to see what sham arrangements these collectives come up with to try to make it look like their deals are truly using a player’s name, image and likeness.

I also don’t expect places like Miami or Tennessee to publicly brag about their exorbitant NIL deals that can’t possibly be in the spirit of the NCAA’s guidelines.

It’s such a cluster because the Supreme Court said the NCAA can’t stop players from making money based on their NIL. Then states started making their own rules. Now the NCAA’s received pushback about it being the Wild West (not sure they can stop it considering the Supreme Court ruling), so they issue vague guidelines that arguably violate the Sup. Ct.’s ruling.

A Detroit University basketball player received a big NIL deal that requires him to sell glowballs… yes, glowballs. Up to 20,000 of them!! You might see more deals arranged like that where players are “required” to sell some weird trinket.

For the collectives that pay each player a set amount of money, I don’t know how that could be consistent with the NCAA’s requirement that each deal “must be based on an independent, case-by-case analysis of the value that each athlete brings to an NIL agreement…” How can paying every football player 50k be viewed as an independent, case by case analysis of that particular player’s worth?

My guess is the NCAA knows it can’t stop this from happening and doesn’t really intend to do anything to people unless they somehow uncover evidence of offers made to prospective recruits or transfers. And that seems unlikely to happen.

PGA Championship

It wasn’t that long ago that Bryson Dechambeau had “solved golf” and was going to win the Masters by 20 strokes. A year and a hand injury later, and he’s over 100/1 to win the PGA Championship. That’s crazy.

I like Collin Morikawa and Cam Smith this week. Also think Xander Schauffele is worth fading after he shot 20-something under at TPC Bunk Ranch last weekend.

Former Tech golfer, Mito Pereira, continues to play well and may be about to break out.

Tech Basketball Roster

When the hell is Dom Welch going to commit? Ben Golan was calling this a “done deal” weeks ago. I’m ready to get this finalized because Welch + Fisher makes this an intriguing group that is probably one of the best 10-15 rosters in the country. Add in our home court advantage + the wizardry of Mark Adams, and this is a team that could be a top 2-3 seed in the NCAA tourney again.

Tech Baseball

Part of me wants Tech to maintain its standing in national polls but get snubbed as a regional host. I think it would be hilarious for someone to have a top 5ish Tech team in their regional as a 2 seed and have to face Brandon Birdsell on Saturday.

As much angst as there’s been about our pitching this year, it’s not for a lack of “stuff.” The guys we threw on Sunday — Hampton, Molina, Sanders, and Becker — all of them have high-level stuff. Mid 90s fastballs and sharp breaking balls are tough to hit, even when the guy throwing them technically has a suboptimal ERA.

Owen Washburn and Hudson White are two of the best FR in the country and will be (or already are) two of the best players in the conference. They are studs.

In post-season play, the first team to get to 2-0 almost always advances. It doesn’t matter whether that’s the regional, super regional (duh), or in Omaha. And our top 2 starters are the real deal. Probably the best 1-2 punch in the Big 12, which I was not expecting coming into the season.

There’s a reason only 4 teams have better betting odds to win the CWS than us. It’s because this team is for real and we will run out 2 legit arms in game 1 and 2 of any postseason tourney.
