I was listening to 104.3 this morning (for the first time) and listened to two guys who seemed to be in the know talk about how often we should run. I believe it was in answer to someone's text. Anyway, their answers were predictable--we had a 1,000 yard rushed last season and a line that now is a pretty good run blocking line, so we should probably stay with about a 55-45 mix, pass to run. And to be honest, that is what I would have said too. They pointed out that if we had a two to three score lead, we would want to let the air out of the ball, which is pretty common football sense. And conversely, if we are trailing by more than seven, we probably would stay primarily in the air. Ok, all is good.
But then I thought, is that the way Leach would have done it. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot about the guy that I don't particularly like, but he does know offensive football. Leach would find your weakness better than most, and put his foot on your throat. If he had a ten point lead and his passing game was beginning to heat up, he would continue to pass the ball. (I don't know if the opposite could be said--we have a ten point deficit and the running game is heating up, would he start running more?).
I have to admit, I do kind of like that philosophy. I don't like to bury our heads in the proverbial sand and try to run out the clock. I'm thinking you exploit whatever you can, and not worry about the ratio of run vs pass plays.
What do you guys think?
