Pulling the plug on cable

At this point, I'm not sure if this is a "real" option. What I mean by that is that I don't think it would be that efficient for me, or I would miss out on some stuff I watch.

If I wanted to do this, what's the best alternative? I'll still need to be able to watch sports (primarily TTU Football and Rangers), National news, and local news . My wife likes watching a few random network shows, and the only real premium channel we watch is Showtime (primarily Homeland).
