Puerto Rico Travel

I'm looking at scheduling a winter getaway to Puerto Rico. Never been and don't know anyone who's spent much time there.

Has anyone spent extensive time there and have recommendations for where to stay and what to see?

-Just going with the spouse with no kids and looking for a quiet getaway.
-Will rent a car.
-I'm almost a level 2 Spanish speaker so I can handle being off the beaten path - which is my preference to touristy places or all inclusive resorts.
