There is an election in a couple of weeks which has 10 amendments to the Texas Constitution being voted on.
Prop #4 would raise the votes needed to impose a state income tax on Texans. Currently, the law allows for the imposing of a state income tax on a simple majority of votes in the Legislature and a simple majority of citizen votes (50% + 1 vote). This proposition would raise that threshold to 2/3 vote needed in both the Legislature and the citizenry. And make it virtually impossible in the future to impose an income tax.
The lack of state income tax is one of the reasons Texas is thriving economically. Someday, in the far distant future it may be necessary to impose one although I know of no reason to Mess With Texas. If that time comes, then it should be done only with a super majority of the Legislature going on record and the overwhelming support of the citizens.
I'm voting YES in November. Texans should make it as hard for government to reach into our pockets as it is to toss a duly elected president from office or override a veto.
