Yesterday sucked..royally sucked. It was an embarrassment and I wanted Wells/Patterson fired on arrival.
In processing it I understood that I ( and pretty much this entire board) are heaping a decade or more on this coach after 4 games into his 3rd year. 4 games where we are 3-1.
We lost by 35 on the road. I decided to look at other 30+ losses to see if yesterday was really a low point.
2001- UT 42-7
2002 - OU 60-15
2003- MO 62-31, OU 56-25
2004- UT 51-21
2005. - UT 52-17
2006- none
2007- MO 41-10
2008- OU 65-21
2009 none
2010- OU 45-7
2011- ISU 41-7, UT 52-20 OSU 66-6
2012 - KSU 55-25, OSU 59-21
2013- none
2014 - KSU 65-13 TCU 82-27
2015- none...but only because we scored a lot . several 20+ point losses giving up points by the bushel
2016- WVU 48-17 , ISU 66-10
2017- none
2018- none
2019- OU 55-17
2020- OU 62-28
So...what we saw yesterday wasn't a low point. It was pretty much a yearly occurance and we are a tired, frustrated fan base that might be extremely fatigued with 2 decades of absolutely abysmal defensive football.
Not sure if we are broken or if this is the norm but our fan base seems to have been totally trained to look at offense first. Most of those 30+ point losses saw us scoring 20 or more. In the Kliff era there is a slew of 20+ point losses where we scored 40 or more.
No..it's just not accurate to say you cannot field a competitive defense with a high scoring offense. Good teams do. Baylor did, OU and UT did ,TCU did.
I don't know if MW is the answer. I know the defense staff felt very good about being able to compete this year. Either yesterday was a fluke or they are clueless to what a good defense is. The next 3 weeks will answer that. I am actually looking at the defensive play as much as I am the W/L .
Even if we go 3-0 in that span, if we do it in shootouts I will have doubts about this D staff.
I'm just sick of crappy defense that routinely is the bottom of the barrel.
