OT: Typical airline policy?

Booked wife a trip with to Austin with layover in Dallas, she purposely missed flight from Dallas to Austin to ride to Austin with friends. Airline ends up canceling the return flight then charging us $150 plus $74 in fees to rebook return flight. Am pretty pissed.
