OT: Last minute vacation haggling

Anyone with any experience doing this? Don't have much to do next week, so thinking I want cooler weather.

Outside of emailing owners on VRBO and sending low ball offers, anyone have any other ideas? Seem to be plenty available, so I was going to wait until last minute.
