Freer picks one-time NFL QB Bomar to lead athletic program

Freer's new head coach and athletic director knows a thing or two about football. That's because he's been around every level of the sport.

The Freer school board approved the hiring of former University of Oklahoma and NFL quarterback Rhett Bomar in a special meeting Monday night. After chasing a shot at the NFL and professional football, Bomar spent 2012 and 2013 an offensive coach at Orange Grove High School under his father and head coach Jerry Bomar. He was at Alief Taylor High School in Houston this fall.

At Orange Grove, the Bomars helped transform a mediocre program into a small school powerhouse, known for a prolific offense and a potent passing attack. Bomar was also credited with molding Orange Grove's last two quarterbacks.

Bomar, 29, replaces former Freer football coach and athletic director Jake Hoftsetter who said in February that he was stepping down after two seasons. Under Hofstetter, the Buckaroos were 1-10 in 2014 and 4-5 in 2013. Despite winning only one game in Distrtict 16-3A, the Buckaroos advanced to the Class 3A, Div. II playoffs. They lost to Odem, 66-6, in the first round. Hofstetter said he was optimistic that Freer would improve this season, but inexperience, youth, injuries and a strong new district made for a challenging campaign.
