I hate to start another OT thread but I’m not sure how to handle this one. I’m sorry for the novel.
We have a 140 pound French Mastiff & an 18 pound Cavapoo and they’re best buds despite the size difference. Around 7 PM yesterday, my fiancée and I were walking our dogs in our residential neighborhood on one of our normal routes. Our mastiff is 3 weeks removed from knee surgery so he and I were going slowly about 10 yards back.
2 large German Shepherds, taller than my mastiff, started going insane as soon as our Cavapoo passed by their fence. The weight of the two dogs broke enough boards for one of the dogs to wedge out and it sprinted directly for our little dog. Both me and my mastiff started running towards them and despite his gimpy leg, he beat me there. It bit our Cavapoo but our mastiff tackled it and pinned it on the ground against the fence almost immediately after. I got there and grabbed the GS by the collar/neck and tried to pin its head against the ground while it was trying to bite us.
The owners were in the backyard the whole time and completely clueless. They had no idea one of their dogs broke out and just kept yelling “what’s happening?!”. It took them 5+ minutes to come around the side of the fence and get their dog, all while I’m wrestling with the fvcking thing on the ground. Thankfully our Cavapoo’s bite marks aren’t bad but I got some pretty deep punctures in my arms.
For some bizarre reason the husband sent his wife and daughter over instead of coming himself, and they were too frazzled to really help. The wife got emotional when she saw I was leaking blood, but once they finally got their dog away, I didn’t say much and just wanted to get our dogs home.
I should go over there today and talk to them but idk what I’d even say. The last thing I want to do is have someone’s dog put down, but at the least I want to demand they replace their janky fence so this doesn’t happen again. Me and the mastiff go on 1/4 of the walks my fiancée and cavapoo take, and the GS would’ve ragdolled our cavapoo if we weren’t there. It would’ve hurt my fiancée too who absolutely would’ve intervened.
These people live like 15 houses down and I don’t want to make enemies, but I feel like I have a responsibility to address this somehow. I’m afraid animal control will choose to put the dog down since I got bit. How would you go about this?
