I have been with my current employer for 8 years. In that time I moved from a medical sales position, to a healthcare sales manager position they created for me. My boss and I are very tight and work extremely well together. He and I have talked several times about moving into his job when he advances (could happen anywhere from tomorrow to 3 years from now). At that point I would be VP level and my comp would increase by 40% or so.

Well, on Thursday, I was approached by the Region President and asked to take over the Dallas District (all product lines; full P&L responsibility, moving from 2 to 11 direct reports, blah, blah, blah). This role actually carries more responsibility than the VP of Healthcare position would and would be a 30-40% comp increase.

No brainer, right? Well, here's the rub. My new boss would be a dude hated and not respected by pretty much everyone. This guy genuinely sucks. He is a lifer with my company so I don't see him moving on for at least 2 years. People who work for him are miserable, and with the Dallas District being the "flagship" for the Region, I would have multiple daily interactions with the guy and I know he would make me as miserable as he does everyone else. I was very blount with the president as to why I didn't throw my hat in the ring for the job and he is well aware of how despised this guy is. He said he was "coaching" him to be better....but the dude is in his 60's....he ain't changing.

Anyway, I am torn and need to have an answer by Monday. Any thoughts, suggestions, words of wisdom would be appreciated.
