Springfield, Mass. [/B]- Canyon Lady Eagles' basketball coach Joe Lombard has been honored by the Basketball Hall of Fame as their 2015 winner of the Morgan Wootten Award for girls basketball with their Lifetime Achievement Award.
Together with Harvey Reid, the boys coach from Ralph L. Fike High School in Wilson, N.C., Lombard will be presented with the award Wednesday in Chicago. "Coach Reid and Coach Lombard are two of the finest coaches in high school basketball history," said John L. Doleva, president and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "While their win-loss records are undoubtedly impressive, these men committed to teaching their players more than X's and O's for several decades. They serve as fantastic examples of true leadership."
The Morgan Wootten Awards are named for Wootten, who is one of two high school coaches enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. The annual award recognizes two high school coaches, one for boys and one for girls. Wootten, a 46-year coach of DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsvile, Md., said, "These two coaches have dedicated their lives to the game and are extremely deserving of the award."
The award winners are chosen by a nationally based committee comprised of Hall of Famers, national high school media members, tournament directors and others who have significantly impacted the game.
