Consider what we’ve seen in 2019:
- An amazing start to Big 12 hoops race in January, culminating in 30-point smackdown of Kansas and then a road win at Iowa State to win a Big 12 title.
- An indoor track conference title and multiple individual national championships.
- March madness and historic run to final four and the title game.
- Baseball opens season ranked in top 10 and after slow start, catches fire to win the B12. Wins series over Xerox on road to clinch the title.
- Track lives up to expectations outdoors with a conference title and dominant showing to win the whole effing NCAA title.
- Softball, golf, tennis are all competitive and relevant in conference and national picture. Girls golf wins some tournaments, and the once-doormat softball team is ranked consistently in top 20.
- Cap it all off with baseball blasting through regional and super-regional then coming up clutch with two wins in CWS. Final four baby.
Not to mention Culver and Jung getting drafted in top 10 and keeping Tech programs in the public eye.
Man. (Undoubtedly I left some highlights off my list.)
I graduated from Tech in 1983, and I can’t recall us being competitive or relevant in any sport during my four years. None. This included 1-9-1 in football in 1981, bottom tier basketball finishes every year, and mediocre baseball (playing in basically a Little League quality stadium with plywood bleachers and chain-link outfield fence). Four Years of Suck.
Despite today’s finish, it feels so good to finally pause, take a breath and look back on the run we just ended. I’m so proud of the way our athletes have represented the school. We may never see this kind of run again, but you have to be optimistic about building on this and solidifying our reputation.
TL DR- it’s a great time to be a Red Raider.
